WordPlay welcomes Tim'm West to Board

July 3, 2018

WordPlay Cincy is proud to announce the addition of Tim’m West to the Board of Trustees.

An educator, poet, youth advocate and hip hop artist, West has worked in education and youth programs across the U.S. He has traveled extensively around the country speaking about issues at the intersection of race, gender, sexuality and social justice. He currently leads Teach For America’s national LGBTQ Community Initiative, advancing safer and braver classrooms for LGBTQ students and educators. West has also served as inaugural faculty at Oakland School for the Arts and more recently as Director of Youth Services at Center on Halsted in Chicago.

“I have long believed that writing poetry and creative writing were outlets that not only clarified my sense of self, but that at times renewed my sense of purpose and even saved my life,” West said. “As an educator, performance artist and author, it gives me great pleasure to join the Board of Trustees at WordPlay, for all the ways the organization bridges relationships between diverse students in Cincinnati and encourages them to find their voices and each other through the stories they create, both respectively and collaboratively.”

Originally a member of WordPlay’s Program Committee, West joins the Board as the organization approaches its sixth year in operation. Founded in 2012, WordPlay has steadily expanded since its first year, now offering programs on location at partner schools in addition to the writing center in Northside. Executive Director Libby Hunter is confident West’s unique skill set will help the organization further build connections between students, volunteers, program leaders and the wider community.

“It was a huge boost to us when Tim'm joined our Program Committee at the beginning of this year. His level of experience across so many sectors—education, writing and publishing, performance, LGBTQ, equity and inclusion—is a rare mix of invaluable skills, knowledge and passion. And now that he's joined the Board of Trustees, I'm over the moon,” Hunter said. “Tim'm is a tireless advocate for the the arts as a way to connect youth to opportunity and growth, and has decades of experience building community among diverse individuals and groups. I am thrilled to have him on our leadership.”
