The Martha J. Kidd Foundation Awards $1,000 to WordPlay Cincy

May 23, 2017

The Martha J. Kidd Foundation recently granted WordPlay Cincy $1,000 in support of their summer, K-8 programs. This local grant provides opportunity for expansion on and beginning new programs for students K through 8th grade. This grant will support our summer programs: Explorer Club’s Camp, Storytelling, Nature in the City, Write On!, Poetry + Dance + Rhythm + Movement, Writing Workshop with the Girl Scouts, and Summer Scholars Creative Learning Academy.

WordPlay is honored to receive this grant from the Martha J. Kidd Foundation, supporting efforts in growing our summer programming according to the 5 elements of our holistic approach to working with youth: Personal Development, Innovative Approaches to Learning, Community Building, Creative Expression, and Future Orientation. Together, with help from the Martha J. Kidd Foundation, we are able to extend the opportunities for empowerment through education that can be transformative.

These summer programs are designed to serve students finishing kindergarten, up through 8th grade, combating the summer learning slide that is accountable for more than 50% of the academic gap between students in upper- and lower-income households. The students can choose any or all of the several free camps and workshops offered this summer. The themes for this summer’s programs include reading, creative writing, kinesthetic learning through field trips, creative projects, and group work. Also offered, and open to all ages, is a drop-in writing lab where staff writers will offer a helping hand with any ongoing creative writing project the students may have.

The Martha J. Kidd Foundation is a non-profit organization created to provide educational scholarships for the most deserving, less fortunate children looking for education. Not only is the foundation concerned with childhood education, but they also give grants to organizations looking for community improvement, and to outreach services in urban areas. Founded in 2005, after the passing of their beloved Martha Kidd, the Martha J. Kidd Foundation desires to spread passion for life and knowledge to all. Many scholarships and grants are given out each year by the Martha J. Kidd Foundation, for more visit https://www.mkiddfoundation.org.
