After a busy and productive end-of-summer break, the WordPlay doors open again on Monday, August 31st for our WordPlay Scholars and Happy Hour programs. WordPlay Saturdays resume on September 12th.
Families can drop by anytime Monday – Thursday, August 31st – September 3rd, 3-6 pm to register children for the programs:
WordPlay Scholars, 2:30 – 5 pm Monday – Thursday: Students in grades K-8 are paired one-on-one with a trained tutor to work on homework, Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) time and educational enrichment activities in a fun, creative environment that builds social-emotional and community-building skills in addition to academics and literacy.
First priority for WordPlay Scholars goes to families who meet free or reduced lunch criteria. Students new to our programs may start with one day a week Monday – Thursday, and after a successful first semester, can add a second day each week. Students are always welcome to attend our Saturday programs, a mix of engaging creative writing experiences and homework/D.E.A.R. time.
Happy Hour, 5 – 6 pm, Monday – Thursday: At 5 pm, the backpacks go away, and children in grades K-8 explore new creative horizons in our daily Happy Hour multi-disciplinary workshops led by local artists and educators. Enrollment is open to all with no income qualifications, space is limited so please register early!
WordPlay Saturdays, beginning September 12, 12 – 4 pm: Our Saturdays offer students in grades K-12 fun options in both academic support and creative endeavors. From 12 – 2 pm we host creative writing workshops in a different theme each week of the month: Every first Saturday we are very pleased to partner with our friends from Visionaries + Voices’ Teaching Artist Program for this unique offering, where children get to make and reflect on visual art projects; every second Saturday is NewsPlay, which covers current events and journalistic techniques; STEAM- powered writing happens every 3rd Saturday of the month, fusing theoretical science with speculative fiction writing; and the 4th Saturday is devoted to every kid’s favorite subject – them! Students work on fun social-emotional activities and writings, promoting confidence, self-awareness, and understanding our place in the world around us.
We are proud to introduce the WordPlay Cincy Scribes, a Saturday workshop from 12 – 2 pm for students in grades 8+. Our very own spoken word teaching artist, the Silent Poet, Desirae Hosley, will lead the group in writing poetry, honing performance skills, and other creative writing and performance techniques to build community, confidence, and the power of the word.
