Summertime Learnin'

June 15, 2014

The final school bell of the year has officially rung, which means that summertime in Cincinnati is in full swing. Even though schools are closing their doors for the summer, it doesn’t mean that WordPlay Cincy is closing theirs.

Once again, WordPlay is opening its doors this summer for 6 weeks of learning, creative exploration and community building with 5 programs. All WordPlay programs are free. Space in each program is limited, so in order to guarantee a spot, registration/enrollment is required by Friday, June 6 by emailing info@wordplaycincy.org or by calling 513-260-8129.

First off the bat in Wordplay’s summer lineup is the return of the Summer Scholars program. The first priority in the Summer Scholars is given to children from families that meet free lunch criteria. This program is for students entering grades 1-8 in the 2014/15 school year. This program will reinforce academic skills and teach social-emotional skills through many hands-on, experimental and fun activities.

Summer Scholars meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-6 p.m. and will be running June 10-July 17. Students are required to attend at least once a week, but can go two or three days if they want. Parents/legal guardians must come in to WordPlay to enroll their student.

The next summer program WordPlay is offering is the WordUP workshop for high school students in grades 9-12 from any school. This workshop will continue to be taught by University of Cincinnati (UC) professor and WordPlay co-founder, Elissa Yancey. It will also feature guest teacher, Mark Flanigan, who is a local poet and spoken word artist. Flanigan worked closely with WordPlay’s Aiken High School students on their Enter Stage Write performance, an autobiographical piece that premiered at the Hoffner Lodge in Northside on May 10th.

WordUP will meet on Wednesdays 3-5 p.m. and will run June 11-July 16.

WordPlay is also introducing a new workshop to their summer lineup. Weaving Womens Words is a community writing workshop for women and girls ages 13+. This workshop provides a multi-generational experience for women to come together, share their stories, and craft new ones collaboratively. Writer Pauletta Hansel will teach this workshop. Hansel is the author of four poetry collections, co-editor of the literary publication of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative, has been featured and anthologized in several publications and journals, and has taught writing with teenagers in numerous settings.

The Women’s Community Writing Workshop will meet on Thursdays 3-5 p.m. and will run June 19- July 24.

Another workshop that WordPlay is offering this summer is the Tuesday Typing Pool. This workshop is a continuation of their popular school-year group. It’s a creative writing group for young writers in grades 3-6 and will be team-taught by two Ph.D. candidates in Creative Writing at UC. Students will have the opportunity to submit their work to WordPlay for fall publication.

The Tuesday Typing Pool will meet Tuesdays from 4:30-6 p.m. and will run June 10- July 15.

WordPlay will also be continuing their WordPlay Saturdays program as well. This program is just an open-door, drop-in day where kids can come if they couldn’t get enough WordPlay in the Summer Scholars program. On Saturdays, WordPlay will offer all sorts of different programs that focus on multi-media, multidisciplinary project-based activities.

Prior enrollment for Saturdays is NOT necessary, but WordPlay does ask that parents come in and fill out a form at the writing center when they drop off their kids. WordPlay Saturdays will run June 14-July 19 from Noon-4.

Last, but not least, WordPlay will be offering their Bookbinder’s Guild Summer Camp. At this camp, students will learn to make paper and create their own hand-bound journals.

The camp is for grades 3+ and will run July 7-11 from 9 a.m.-noon.

Once again, the required registration is due by Friday, June 6. WordPlay looks forward to continue learning, growing and having a blast with you this summer!
