WordPlay launches end-of-year appeal focused on inclusion and accessibility.
You are needed as we work to ensure an enduring and accessible space for Cincinnati's young people to spark storytelling through writing, performance and visual arts.
Yesterday was a watershed moment for us, the elevator installation began! It’s been a little over two years since we purchased 1556 Chase Avenue. The former church school and HVAC company sat empty; most of Northside probably never even noticed the building that sat at the back of the fenced-in parking lot. Just a few months prior to Covid descending upon the world, we embarked on the total transformation of the space into a dedicated home for the young people of Cincinnati to access free literary and creative arts programming.
Now, as we close in on the final steps of this massive project, we are seeking to raise the funds necessary to pay off the construction in full. The largest feature of this transformation represents a commitment to the public that WordPlay made well before the project was underway: installing a full-capacity elevator to service all four floors of the building. This cost alone adds up to over $600,000 given the infrastructure needed. It is the last element of our renovation to fall into place, and we have just over $170,000 yet to raise to pay off the construction in its entirety.
“UpWords” is an opportunity for you to share with us words that spark imagination, joy, and promise in your life.
We’re excited to introduce “UpWords,” a campaign that centers inclusion, ensuring that our new space has the ADA features necessary to be fully accessible to everyone. In our UpWords campaign, we are seeking to raise $50,000 from individual donors by December 31st. We ask you to join us in this initiative, where you can literally leave your mark on our building, inspiring the countless young people who will walk through our doors.
Join the other incredible donors who share your passion for inclusive community and creative expression. Gifts of all amounts are immensely valued, and will forever be recognized inside the building along with all donors who helped to make this vision a reality. Our UpWords campaign has a unique feature, however; at the $1,000 level, you can “purchase” a stair in our building and designate a word or phrase of up to 25 characters to be painted on that stair. We welcome individuals to join together with family, friends, co-workers, book clubs, bowling team, and others to collectively raise $1,000 and buy a stair. This is your chance to share a word of inspiration with the countless young people who will enter our building, literally leaving your mark for others to follow.
WordPlay was founded nearly 10 year ago thanks to the dedicated efforts of countless individuals coming together to create a space where all were seen and heard and valued. Thanks to your generosity, we will close the gap on this extraordinary milestone and ensure WordPlay will be here for Cincinnati for decades to come.
Wishing you and yours all the best. In gratitude,
The WordPlay Cincy Team
