Celebrate creative learning opportunities for local youth at fourth annual WordPlay fundraiser
OVER-THE-RHINE—With a new building located in the heart of the community of Northside and a new slate of expanded opportunities to connect with thousands of youth from around the region, WordPlay Cincy has plenty to celebrate at its fourth annual “Legendary Dinner” at Nicola’s restaurant in Over-the-Rhine, Sept. 12, 2019. The dinner, hosted by WordPlay Board Member and Nicola’s philanthropic owner Nicola Pietoso, serves as the official public launch for the first-ever capital campaign for the seven-year-old nonprofit that builds literacy through the arts. WordPlay’s new home will boast four beautifully decorated levels with a gated parking lot, multiple performing areas, a kitchen, its popular Urban Legend Typewriters repair and sales space, and program workshop rooms with specialized equipment like a podcast recording studio. It will also bring plentiful office and meeting space, offering the organization room to grow and sublease to other innovative programming partners.
“We are looking forward to sharing more stories about all we will be able to support and enrich with our new space, as well as hear from our amazing youth and teaching artists,” said Libby Hunter, WordPlay co-founder and Executive Director. “We cannot thank Nicola Pietoso enough for this opportunity to raise awareness, and funds, as we continue to deepen our commitment to community-building and lifelong education through the arts and storytelling.” The theme of WordPlay’s Capital Campaign—“Unleash curiosity; Ignite community”—reflects the distinctive focus and energy that has allowed the scrappy nonprofit to grow exponentially in the last two years. With programs in seven schools and reaching an average of 1,200 students every month, WordPlay proudly works alongside teachers, artists and youth to spark creativity and create self-efficacy while inspiring lifelong learning. Its reading, writing and storytelling programs foster creative collaborations around the city, in schools and in its Northside headquarters, which will soon be housed in the 7,000-square-foot home.
Guests at this year’s Nicola's Legendary Dinner for WordPlay Cincy can choose between purchasing individual tickets or an official table sponsorship for 10 guests. Tickets are available for $150 per person. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from young people and families whose lives have been impacted by WordPlay while enjoying five exemplary courses by Nicola’s esteemed chef, with wines paired to each course. Ticket purchases, gifts, and auction winnings at Nicola’s Legendary Dinner will drive the success of the campaign for building purchase, renovation, furniture, fixtures and equipment, associated expenses, increased operating costs and handicap accessibility.
