A literary gift guide for the holidays (or any day!)
It's the season of giving, and here at WordPlay we believe books make the best gifts. But it can be hard to know where to start. Whether you know a reluctant young reader or an avid bookworm who has seemingly read everything, how do you know which books will capture their interest?
We recently asked for suggestions of books to give this holiday season, for preschoolers all the way up to full-fledged adults. These books come recommended by WordPlay's network of parents, teachers, librarians, booksellers, writers and artists, and they cover a wide range of interests and reading levels.
If you want to shop local, you can find all of these great reads at our favorite Cincinnati bookstore, Joseph-Beth Booksellers. However, if you are an Amazon shopper, make sure you sign up for Amazon Smile and select WordPlay Cincy as your chosen charity. Then Amazon will donate a portion of the money you spend to WordPlay. It's that easy to give back this holiday season!
Picture books are the best, aren't they? The illustrations are gorgeous. The stories are fun. Even just looking at the pictures is good exercise for children's brains. Below are some excellent picture books for little ones or picture book fans in general, ranging from classics to new releases.
As kids begin to take the (sometimes wobbly) steps toward reading on their own, those old picture books can be a great jumping off point. However, if you're looking for something a little more challenging, these early readers and beginning chapter books will be a win every time.
MIDDLE GRADE (4-6)
Are you ready for the amazing array of subjects covered by these middle grade books? Sports, friendship, immigration, deafness, cerebral palsy, art thieves, cooking, dyslexia, family, identity, unicorns, aaaaand... the witness protection program. Needless to say, it's a good time for middle grade books.
TEEN/YOUNG ADULT (7-12)
We're here for you, teens. What kinds of books you want to read? Current events or history? Real world or fantasy? Humorous or dramatic? Poetry, prose or graphic novel? Trick question; we have them all covered here.
BOOKS FOR ADULTS
We didn't forget about you, grown-ups! Below are some books that WordPlay staff and supporters have had on their reading lists lately.
