WordPlay Cincy Scribes Teen Open Mic Night Features Special Guest Host SPEAK

Cincinnati, OH -- The WordPlay Cincy Scribes Poetry Team is proud to hold their first teen Open Mic Night of the school year on Friday, September 29th from 5-7pm with special guest host Lex Nycole of SPEAK: A Space for Thoughtful Expressions.

The free event, taking place at WordPlay’s main writing center in Northside, is open to teens aged 13+ with their families and friends from across the Greater Cincinnati region, and young writers do not need to be participants in WordPlay programs to attend.

WordPlay Communications Director Reba Hennessey enthused “Teens’ most relied-upon networks are often deeply rooted in shared interests, but limited by the constraints of transportation--which creates the heavy reliance we often see manifesting within their use of technology and social media. City-wide open mic nights are a great way for students to connect face-to-face through their stories, shared experiences and artistry--transcending the boundaries of neighborhoods--building up their self-esteem through celebration of performance, expanding their worlds and reinforcing their creative networks of support.”

The evening will be emceed by host Lex Nycole of SPEAK: A Space for Thoughtful Expression, featuring spoken word performances from Cat, Anais, Daphne, Lilly who are members of the WordPlay Cincy Scribes teen poetry team led by Program Coordinator and teaching artist Desirae Hosley; as well as Jori An Cotton, WordPlay’s Writer-In-Residence. During the open-mic event, all teen attendees will have an opportunity to take the mic and perform pieces for celebration by their peers as well.
