Mount St. Joseph University's Service Learning program recently granted WordPlay Cincy $3,000 in support of WordPlay's programs. This local grant provides opportunity for expansion on and beginning new programs for students in and around the Cincinnati community. This grant will support our efforts in maximizing the children and teens' education through reading, writing, and storytelling.
WordPlay is honored to receive this grant from Mount St. Joseph University in support of our efforts at growing our organization according to the 5 elements of our holistic approach to working with youth: Personal Development, Innovative Approaches to Learning, Community Building, Creative Expression, and Future Orientation. Together, with the University, we are able to extend the opportunities for empowerment through education that can be transformative.
The programs we offer are designed to serve students finishing kindergarten, up through high school, including combating the summer learning slide that is accountable for more than 50% of the academic gap between students in upper- and lower-income households. There are a multitude of school year and summer time programs offered for students of all school ages, including learning academies, creative workshops, and creative writing and performance opportunities.
Mount St. Joseph University is involved in a variety of activities, hoping to improve and enhance life quality in the Cincinnati area and further. The University prepares students as effective professionals, but have realized there is more to life than career; being productive citizens and ethical leaders ready, willing and able to contribute to the greater good. The Service Learning Program at the University is based upon its mission statement, "service to others" and is a prime example of how the Mount Community lives and breathes its mission.
