The Scripps Howard Foundation recently granted WordPlay Cincy $1,250 in support of their summer programs. This local grant provides opportunity for growth and development of the summer programs for all students, kindergarten through high school. This grant will support creative development for the students' learning and literacy skills.
WordPlay is honored to receive this grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation, beneficial to carrying out our summer programming according to the 5 elements of our holistic approach to working with youth: Personal Development, Innovative Approaches to Learning, Community Building, Creative Expression, and Future Orientation. Together, with the Scripps Howard Foundation, we are able to extend the opportunities for empowerment through education that can be transformative.
These summer programs are designed to serve students finishing kindergarten, up through 8th grade; as well as those in high school, combating the summer learning slide that is accountable for more than 50% of the academic gap between students in upper- and lower-income households. Younger students (K-8) can choose between several free themed camps and workshops that include reading, creative writing, kinesthetic learning through field trips, creative projects, and group work. Teen programs will focus on creative writing and sharing on themes of community building, and current events; as well promoting self reflection, personal development, and goal setting. They will also offer spoken word performance opportunities for interested participants. Finally, open to all ages, a drop-in writing lab will take place, where staff writers will offer a helping hand with any ongoing creative writing project the students may have.
